OUR FOCUS

Omaroo Babydoll Sheep Stud currently has two “bloodlines” which are made up from the DNA of several of Australia’s best Babydoll Studs. Hillgrove (formerly Gully Green), Best of British, Harcourt & Roblin Studs. Because Babydolls are considered a rare breed, our aim is to carefully select the ram and ewes we will use to ensure we do not inbreed.

This year we will mate all 6 of our ewes and we have been very careful to select the correct bloodlines and to achieve genetic diversity.

We use and recommend “Kintracks” animal breeder directory which is a program to assist in the correct documentation to assist in avoiding in-breeding and the co-efficiency of each ram and ewe paired

Due to the existence of modern Southdown’s in the commercial sheep industry and the restrictions on importing semen or sheep from overseas (can be done but it is a process that takes years and costs exceed hundreds of thousands of dollars) and the tendency of breeders to keep their best ewes for breeding, it can be quite difficult to locate pure Babydolls ewes in Australia.

Much like everything, when demand outstrips supply, waiting lists and wait times can be lengthy and purchase costs can be high.

Although Babydoll sheep are becoming a popular breed due to their small stature and calm nature, they are still quite rare which means there is no quick or cheap way to obtain a sizeable mob of Babydolls.

ATTRIBUTES

Babydolls are lovely little sheep. They are smaller than average which makes them easier to handle and they have a wonderful, placid temperament.

Babydolls are naturally very friendly which makes them ideal for families with children.

Babydolls are renowned for grazing under orchard trees or grapevines, however as these industries rapidly decline due to rising costs of production, the Babydoll is increasingly becoming more popular for “hobby farms” and small animal enthusiasts.
